Closure of Weather Alert Service
After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue our Weather Alert Service, effective from 1 July 2024. Current subscribers will continue to receive alerts until this date.
We understand you may rely on this service to be notified about severe weather events. Prior to the service concluding, we encourage you to consider one of the many alternative options available.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your understanding.
Severe Weather Warning alerts FAQ's
You’ll receive a message whenever an expert meteorologist forecasts that severe weather will be occurring in your suburb. Only severe weather events, such as strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and tropical cyclones, will trigger a warning.
UBIMET meteorologists analyse radar and satellite imagery and use the best weather forecast data available from around the world to issue the alerts. The types of warnings that they issue include strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and tropical cyclones.
Red warnings are also considered a high level of warning. They’re issued for very strong winds, large thunderstorms and very intense rain.
- Keep your family (and pets) indoors and away from windows.
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Avoid parking in low-lying or flood-susceptible areas. If there’s risk of large hail, seek undercover parking immediately.
- Secure or put away loose items around your property.
- Avoid driving until conditions improve. If you have to drive, beware of debris and crosswinds – especially if driving a high-sided vehicle.
- If there’s lightning, unplug electrical appliances and avoid using your landline phone.
Do not read the alerts while driving. It is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone while driving and attracts a significant fine and licence demerit points.
