RAC is committed to providing a website that is accessible and user friends for all people, regardless of technology or ability.

We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines.

We aim to conform to a level of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0.

Whilst RAC strive to adhere to accessibility standards and guidelines, it is not always possible to do so.

Accessible features

Below are a range of accessibility features that have been implemented on this site:

  • Alternative text for images provides a brief description of images in use. Most images used for decorative purposes do not contain alternative text and there may be images on this site without "alt tags". We are working towards fixing this issue.
  • Custom font icons - informative font icon elements contain alternative text. We are working towards fixing this issue.
  • Colour contrast - optimum visual contrast has been used to ensure users with visual impairments, low vision and colour blindness are able to see the content. Suggestive search text and icons used for decorative purposes may not meet the optimum visual contrast.
  • Date pickers - can have the date typed in directly.
  • Documents - most documents state the type of file.
  • Links - all internal open in the same window. External links on this site may open in a new window without informing the user. We are working towards fixing this issue.
  • Navigation menu is accessible via touch screens.
  • Responsive design for mobile devices through to desktop.
  • Skip to content links - a logical tab order and content available in a linear format to navigate using assistive technologies.
  • Tables – where practical tables are only used to display tabular information with row and column headings defined in the HTML code used for assistive technologies.
  • Text resizing – using the zoom and increase font function in your browser's menu.

PDF documents

RAC publishes many documents in PDF format. This allows these documents to be downloaded and printed with their original formatting intact. These files require the Adobe Acrobat® reader to be viewed and printed. This reader is free and may be downloaded from the Adobe website.

PDF publications can be converted to a format suitable for a screen reader by:

  1. Submitting the URL of the PDF document to the Adobe online conversion tools, which will return the text in HTML format readable by appropriate speech conversion software.
  2. Downloading the PDF document and sending it by email to Adobe for conversion and return in plain format.

Third party applications

  • Embedded forms - our site contains third party forms. There are known issues with embedded forms. We are working to make these third party forms accessible as possible.
  • Video plugins – there are known issues with these third party plugins. For more information see Using YouTube with a screen reader
